This app is designed to confuse people with random sounds. Activate it in obscure places using your phone or a speaker.
How to use
Already playing music? Leave it playing - the sounds mix in on top of it. Set how loud they sit with the relative audio slider.
Delete app
Removes poltergeist.exe from this device: its saved sounds, caches and settings. It stays on the website, so you can install it again later.
Custom interval
Time between sounds. Chaos timing still wobbles around it.
How it works
Pick some sounds. Set how often they fire. Hit UNLEASH and lock your phone. Walk away.
Sounds play at random intervals around the time you set. With chaos timing on, each gap is between 0.75x and 1.25x the base interval - irregular enough that nobody can predict when the next one hits.
Everything is pre-scheduled on the audio clock, so sounds keep playing through a locked screen in almost all cases. No timers, no polling.
For the most reliable results: install poltergeist.exe from Chrome (Settings → Install to Home Screen) rather than running it in a browser tab, then check that Android isn't battery-restricting it, Settings → Apps → poltergeist.exe → Battery → Unrestricted. Once installed from Chrome it appears there under its own name, separate from the browser.
Brave: Brave can only add a shortcut, not a real installed app, so Android never gives poltergeist.exe its own battery setting and background sounds are more likely to be cut off. The app still works, but install from Chrome if you want it to survive a pocketed phone.
Works over Bluetooth. Connect your speaker before hitting UNLEASH. A near-silent signal runs in the background to keep the speaker awake during long gaps.
Playing on top of music: with Share the speaker on (Settings, and it is on by default) poltergeist.exe mixes into whatever is already playing instead of stopping it - start your music, then hit UNLEASH, and use the relative audio slider to set how far underneath it the sounds sit. On Android this costs nothing but the Resume/Stop buttons in the notification shade. On an iPhone it costs locked-screen playback: iOS only keeps a web page's audio running behind a lock screen while that page has claimed the output for itself, so if the phone is going in a pocket, turn Share the speaker off.
Use Test Mode to preview each sound before hiding the device. It exits the active session automatically.
Install
Install poltergeist.exe as an app. Works fully offline, and locked-screen playback is more reliable once installed.
Deleted
Its saved sounds, caches and settings are gone from this device.
